After spending three years housebound and ending up in a VA nursing home at 45, I lost my marriage and faced immense physical challenges. Months of physical therapy, both in-bed and outpatient, led to securing my doctor's permission to rejoin my gym, where I used HIIT bootcamps to regain my strength. Knowing I needed support, I joined disabled veteran adaptive sports groups to stay motivated beyond the gym. Team River Runner (TRR) was the first group I joined, followed by the Wounded Warrior Project and Higher Ground. TRR brought true joy back into my life, reflected in an art project that won 1st place in the special PTSD category at the 2023 VA Creative Arts Festival.
Outdoor activities became my lifeline, far beyond just avoiding the nursing home. These experiences, and the supportive people I met, transformed my life. Camping and outdoor sports, which once seemed daunting, now bring me happiness and motivation, and I’ve become more myself than I have been in decades. If you’re uncertain about these activities, seek out support organizations; they offer more than just assistance—they offer a new lease on life. The benefits far outweigh any difficulties, and I can't recommend these groups enough. Rediscover what once brought you joy; it can guide you back to a life worth living.
